Western Islands Expedition

7 Nights · Sat to SatBaltra → San Cristobal

Islands: Santiago · Isabela · Fernandina · Santa Cruz · Floreana · Santa Fe · San Cristobal

Day 1Saturday
Baltra & Santiago — Sullivan Bay
Arrival · Pahoehoe lava fields · Volcanic origins
Afternoon
Arrive at Baltra Airport and board the Horizon. Navigate to Sullivan Bay on Santiago Island, where you'll walk across a vast pahoehoe lava field from an 1897 eruption — rope-like formations, lava cacti, and a window into the volcanic origins of the entire archipelago.
Day 2Sunday
Isabela & Fernandina — Vicente Roca & Espinoza Point
Premier snorkeling · Marine iguana colonies · Flightless cormorants
Morning
Vicente Roca Point on Isabela offers two sheltered coves with some of the best snorkeling in the Galapagos. The nutrient-rich upwelling waters attract seahorses, sea turtles, penguins, and mola-mola sunfish.
Afternoon
Espinoza Point on Fernandina is the most pristine island in the archipelago — no foreign species have ever been introduced. Walk among hundreds of marine iguanas on black lava rocks, spot flightless cormorants drying their wings, and observe Galapagos hawks overhead.
Day 3Monday
Isabela — Tagus Cove & Urbina Bay
Historic pirate anchorage · Darwin's Lake · Geological uplift
Morning
Tagus Cove has served as an anchorage for pirates and sailors since the 1800s. Hike up to Darwin's Lake for sweeping views of the mangrove forest below, and snorkel with penguins in the sheltered cove.
Afternoon
Urbina Bay was dramatically uplifted from the ocean floor in 1954, leaving coral fossils on dry land. Walk among land iguanas, giant tortoises, and flightless cormorants in this unique geological landscape.
Day 4Tuesday
Isabela — Elizabeth Bay & Moreno Point
Mangrove channels · Volcanic lagoons · Penguins
Morning
Elizabeth Bay is a dinghy-only site where you'll glide through mangrove channels teeming with marine life — sea turtles, rays, and reef sharks in the crystal-clear shallows beneath the canopy.
Afternoon
Moreno Point presents a dramatic landscape of black lava flows dotted with green lagoons and mangroves. Spot Galapagos penguins, blue herons, and flamingos against the stark volcanic backdrop.
Day 5Wednesday
Santa Cruz — Breeding Center & Highlands
Giant tortoise conservation · Twin Craters · Scalesia forest
Morning
Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and its tortoise breeding center to learn about the ongoing conservation programs that have helped save multiple species from extinction.
Afternoon
Head to the Highlands to walk among giant tortoises in the wild, explore the Twin Craters (Los Gemelos) — two massive volcanic sinkholes — and wander through the lush Scalesia cloud forest and lava tunnels.
Day 6Thursday
Floreana — Post Office Bay, Devil's Crown & Cormorant Point
Postal tradition · Underwater crater · Flamingo lagoon
Morning
Continue the centuries-old postal tradition at Post Office Bay. Then snorkel at Devil's Crown, a nearly submerged volcanic crater with vibrant coral reefs, rays, sea turtles, and a diversity of tropical fish.
Afternoon
Cormorant Point features two contrasting beaches — green olivine sand and fine white coral — with a flamingo lagoon between them. Walk the trail and spot shorebirds, stilts, and white-cheeked pintail ducks.
Day 7Friday
Santa Fe & San Cristobal — Lobos Island
Endemic land iguanas · Opuntia forests · Sea lion colony
Morning
Santa Fe is home to towering Opuntia cactus forests and the endemic pale-yellow Santa Fe land iguana, found nowhere else on Earth. Snorkel with playful sea lions in the protected turquoise bay.
Afternoon
Lobos Island near San Cristobal hosts a large sea lion colony and nesting blue-footed boobies along a short coastal trail. Snorkel in the calm channel between the islet and San Cristobal.

Red sand beach · Vermilion flycatchers · Fur seals
Morning
Rabida Island features a striking maroon-red sand beach where vermilion flycatchers, Galapagos hawks, and brown pelicans nest among the cactus groves. All nine Darwin's finch species have been recorded here.
Afternoon
Egas Port on Santiago offers a coastal hike past tide pools and lava grottos where Galapagos fur seals rest in shaded rock shelters. Spot hawks, lava lizards, and marine iguanas along the volcanic shoreline.
Day 3
Genovesa — Darwin Bay & Prince Philip's Steps
Red-footed boobies · Storm petrels · Caldera beach

Darwin Bay sits inside a flooded volcanic caldera with a white-sand coral beach. Walk past nesting Nazca and red-footed boobies, mangroves filled with shorebirds, and frigatebirds in the trees above.
